Tuition fees were legally removed from all public colleges in 2014, but reintroduced for non-EU/EEA students in 2017 in Baden-Württemberg. These charges are set at €1,500 per semester, for studying second-degree students are required to pay €650 per semester. Students from the Member States of Erasmus are excluded from these fees. Moreover, tuition fees for non-EU/EEA Member States have not been reintroduced in the other German states, meaning that tuition at the undergraduate level remains free of charge at all other public universities. However, a nominal administrative fee per semester that typically does not surpass € 250 continues to be charged by students. HOW MUCH MONEY WILL I NEED TO STUDY IN GERMANY?
The cost of living in Germany is very affordable relative to other European countries. The cost figures that you will need about €861 (about $1002 US dollars) a month, which amounts to €10,332 a year (about 12,024 US dollars), to cover your costs of living as an international student in Germany. One of the biggest costs for an international student in Germany is the monthly rent, while other common requirements such as food, clothing, and entertainment costs are in line with the EU average.
DO I NEED A STUDENT VISA TO STUDY IN GERMANY?
Citizens who are from the EU/EEA Member States do not need a visa to study in Germany, but for entering, they need to register with local authorities in Germany to obtain a certificate which shows the length of their studies that they are entitled to reside in Germany. You may need to apply for a student visa to be able to enter and graduate from Germany if you are not a national of EU/EEA Member States. You will require a national visa for studies lasting longer than 3 months. Be sure that you submit as soon as you can so that any complications can be prevented.
WILL I BE ALLOWED TO WORK AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IN GERMANY
Yes, international students in Germany are permitted to work part-time. Working days are however limited to 120 full days or only 240 half days. This reduced number of working days often extends to either paying or unpaid volunteer job placements. Furthermore, international students may not work as freelancers or self-employed while they work the lawfully permitted number of days. On the other hand, you are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week if you are a full-time student from EU/EEA Member States.
DO I NEED TO OPEN A GERMAN BANK ACCOUNT?
It would be prudent to open a German bank account when becoming a student in German since you need it to rent a flat or request insurance. You can't make payments in cash, so you'll have to debit the money. You can confirm that you have enough funding to support your costs in Germany if you are a foreign student from non-EU/EEA countries. To do this, a Blocked German Account, the most frequently used for foreign student account in Germany, can be opened. The blocked credit is €10,332 a year which can be maximumly withdrawn by students up to €861 per month.
DO I NEED TO KNOW GERMAN IF MY STUDY PROGRAM IS IN ENGLISH?
You won't have to have proficient German-speaking skills if the language of your study program is in English.
CAN I STAY IN GERMANY AFTER I FINISH MY STUDY?
The law requires foreign students to live in Germany and seek jobs for 18 months after graduation. You must, however, first apply to renew your permit for residency. In these 18 months, you can work for yourself as much as you want in any sort of career. If you are successful in finding jobs in your career and are granted a valid contract, then you are eligible to apply for an EU Blue Card.
DO I NEED HEALTH INSURANCE TO STUDY IN GERMANY?
Yes, to study in Germany, you require health insurance. Also, students from overseas are entitled to state health care, i.e. students under the age of 30 are eligible instead of being entitled to enroll with a private insurance company. Besides, you must have verification of health insurance as part of visa requirements if you need a visa for entry into Germany, you must have your medical insurance. In this case, before you are fully matriculated and eligible for public health benefits at your institution, you will need to receive private travel health insurance.
CAN I BRING MY FAMILY WHILE I AM STUDYING IN GERMANY?
Yeah, when you have a residency permit in Germany, you can bring your family, such as your child partner, with you. You have the option of applying for a family reunion visa if you remain in Germany for more than one year. You must also, however, offer evidence that you have ample financial means to support them without social welfare.
WHAT IS ‘STUDIENKOLLEG
Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory program for students who don't have a German university degree. In this course students learn about a particular subject or degree program along with the German language, For five days a week, students aim to achieve a passing score from the final assessment test. After completing the final test with a passing score they are eligible and qualified to apply for a degree program at a German university. Your German language skills must be at B1 level to compete in a 'Studienkolleg'
